Lil Durk Demands Judge Sever or Dismiss Case After Feds Alter Charges Weeks Before Trial

Rapper Lil Durk is accusing federal prosecutors of pulling a massive bait-and-switch, claiming they completely overhauled their case against him just weeks before he is slated to go to trial. He is now formally petitioning the judge to either split the trial into separate segments or throw the entire indictment out altogether.
According to newly filed legal documents, Durk’s defense team states they have spent the last 19 months meticulously preparing to fight a murder-for-hire charge. That original charge was tied to the tragic 2022 killing of Savannah rapper Quando Rondo's cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, in Los Angeles. However, his lawyers argue that the prosecution has suddenly called an unfair, last-minute audible.
Durk's powerhouse defense attorneys, Drew Findling and Brian Steel, state that the prosecution recently piled on a slew of entirely new allegations and charges. This fresh wave of accusations includes alleged drug trafficking, robbery, and involvement in an older shooting incident based out of Atlanta. The defense maintains this pivot morphs the legal battle into an entirely different beast than what they originally prepared to combat.
Adding to the defense's frustration, Durk’s team claims the government has even reintroduced evidence concerning a separate January 2022 killing in Chicago. This is evidence that prosecutors had previously taken off the table, reportedly assuring the court for months that they had no intention of presenting it during the upcoming trial.
His legal representatives argue that these drastic, 11th-hour changes have forced them to start from scratch, requiring them to prep for what is essentially a brand-new case just as the trial date looms. Consequently, Durk is requesting that the presiding judge sever these newly introduced charges from the original murder-for-hire allegations, ensuring that the scheduled August trial can proceed unhindered.
Should the judge deny the request to separate the charges, Durk’s attorneys are demanding a complete dismissal. They argue that the continuous legal maneuvering and the ensuing delays have dragged on for so long that they constitute a direct violation of the rapper's constitutional right to a speedy trial.
The Chicago-born artist was originally apprehended by authorities in Florida back in October 2024. At the time, prosecutors alleged that Durk orchestrated a revenge hit targeting Quando Rondo, an act allegedly stemming from the tragic death of fellow Chicago rapper and close associate King Von.
According to the investigators' narrative, while the intended target of the hit ultimately survived the Los Angeles ambush, Quando's cousin, Saviay'a Robinson, was caught in the crossfire and fatally wounded. As of now, the judge overseeing the case has yet to issue a ruling on Durk's request to either split the charges or throw out the indictment.
